The new Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement of students pursuing graduate studies in Alberta. It was established to incent the best and the brightest students, including international students, to study in Alberta.

Value

  • The value of the scholarship is $12,000 and paid out to recipient as one-time payment. Student must have a Canadian bank account to be eligible to receive the award.
  • A student may only receive one Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship per year; these scholarships are NOT renewable.

Application Procedures
Students must be nominated to FGSR by their home department; students cannot apply online in the GSMS Awards Portal. Students applying for Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) must complete the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) Student Declaration form and submit it to their home department by their internal deadline.

Students must consult with their department for their internal deadline and internal application process.

Nomination Procedures
Departments determine the best way to select their AGES nominees. Departments are encouraged to set an earlier, internal departmental deadline to allow time for internal adjudication (if applicable).

Each department is assigned a funding allocation by FGSR, and then selects nominees based on those allocations. The department then nominates students to FGSR by submitting through GSMS Awards Portal (refer to Departmental Memo for details and submission instructions). Departments are to use the ‘GPA Guidelines - Awards’ procedures available in eClass for calculating the GPA on the last 15 credits.

Adjudication Procedures
The FGSR verifies eligibility of department nominees, and notifies winners directly.

About Company

One hundred years later, as we celebrated our Centenary in 2008, our university community spent a year reflecting on our history of graduates and achievements and on our growth over the years into a formidable institution close to 40,000 students strong, into one of the top research universities in North America and one of top 100 public universities in the world. University of Alberta is a Top 5 Canadian university and one of the Top 100 in the world, home to more than 170 graduate programs, 200 undergraduate programs and 400 active student groups.

The early years, under the careful guidance of Tory, who served as President of the University of Alberta from 1908 to 1928, were fruitful ones in which Tory recruited the University’s first professors and organized the construction of the first university buildings, starting with Athabasca Hall in 1911. These years also saw the shadow of the First World War fall over campus life, as well as the dark spectre of the 1918 influenza epidemic. Both events took their toll on the university population, and the 1918 epidemic led to a two-month cessation of university classes and activities in the autumn of that year. Despite setbacks brought on by these events, the University emerged from these trials stronger than ever, and both building construction and population growth continued

The University of Alberta has had the vision to be one of the world’s great universities for the public good since its inception. This university is dedicated to the promise made by founding president Henry Marshall Tory that “… knowledge shall not be the concern of scholars alone. The uplifting of the whole people shall be its final goal.”
