Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Susan Adshead, the Head of Primary at Mamoura British Academy located in Abu Dhabi, to gain insights into the school’s vision, educational philosophy, and plans for the future. With a wealth of experience and a passion for excellence, Susan shared her thoughts on creating an environment that empowers students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
At Mamoura British Academy, we are continually striving to uphold our motto of “Relentlessly pursuing excellence.” As we look ahead to the remainder of 2025, we are excited to announce several ambitious plans that reflect our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and student development.
One of our most significant initiatives is the launch of The Matrix, a dynamic and innovative new learning space designed to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration in line with our bespoke Learner DNA. This unique environment has been carefully crafted to complement our Industry Partnerships through designated zones that promote opportunities to develop and apply business and enterprise skills. Through hands-on projects, mentorship from industry experts, and practical learning experiences, The Matrix will empower students to bridge the gap between education and the professional world.
Our approach to strategic development and improvement begins with actively listening to the voices of our community. Each year, we gather valuable feedback from our key stakeholders—parents, staff, and students—about what they feel we could do to make the school even better. This feedback is a cornerstone of our planning process, as it allows us to align our goals with the needs and aspirations of our community.
The collected insights are carefully reviewed by our Executive Leadership Team, who use this information to shape the strategic direction for the following academic year.
To maintain clarity and momentum, we identify three key drivers each year. These drivers serve as our main priorities, guiding every aspect of our work and ensuring that we stay sharply focused on what matters most. They are chosen to not only address current challenges but also to pursue innovative ideas that enhance learning experiences, improve outcomes, and prepare our students for a successful future.
We believe that keeping students engaged and motivated is about creating meaningful, relevant, and inspiring learning experiences tailored to their needs. We are committed to fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, even among students who may struggle or feel unmotivated.
One of the key ways we achieve this is through our Industry Partnerships, which are integrated into each year group. These partnerships provide students with real-world contexts for their learning, helping them understand the practical applications of their studies. By connecting their education to tangible outcomes and professional environments, students gain a deeper sense of purpose and engagement.
We also continually develop innovative learning environments designed to motivate and inspire. Regular opportunities to work in specialist areas beyond their classrooms—such as Apron Stories (Little Kitchen), The STEM Lab, The Scribble Sanctuary, Dialogue Den and the newly launched headquarters of the school, The Matrix. All of which provide students with fresh and exciting ways to explore their interests and skills. These environments spark creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, ensuring that every child feels empowered to succeed.
We also host regular learning showcases for each year group throughout the year. These events allow students to share their learning journeys and achievements with their peers and families in diverse and creative ways. By promoting parental engagement and celebrating student accomplishments, these showcases reinforce a sense of pride and belonging that drives motivation and perseverance.
Through these initiatives, we strive to create a learning environment where every student feels inspired, supported, and equipped to achieve their full potential.
We take a proactive and comprehensive approach to student well-being, addressing stress and bullying with the utmost seriousness. Our commitment begins with fostering a positive and respectful school culture rooted in our TRACK Values: Trust, Respect, Aspiration, Courage, and Kindness. These values are not just words—they are embedded in every aspect of school life, ensuring that all members of our community understand and uphold the high standards and expectations we set for behavior and interaction.
To reinforce these values, we have an extensive student leadership team that includes TRACK Ambassadors. These student leaders actively promote our values among their peers, fostering a culture of mutual respect and kindness. Additionally, many of our staff and student leaders have completed Mental Health First Aid Training, equipping them to recognize and respond to signs of stress or mental health concerns with empathy and professionalism. We have recently launched a Best Buddies programme, in which some of our student mental health first aiders are available at break and lunch times to play games, cards and chat to any students who may be feeling a little lonely or want someone to talk to.
Our highly visible and approachable pastoral team plays a central role in making Mamoura a happy and safe environment for all. They are deeply committed to ensuring that every student feels supported and valued. Should any issues arise, whether related to stress or bullying, they are addressed immediately and in accordance with our thorough and well-communicated policies.
By combining a strong foundation of shared values, proactive leadership, and robust pastoral care, we strive to create a community where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
We believe that strong partnerships with parents and the wider community are essential to creating an outstanding school. We are committed to fostering a collaborative environment where parents feel valued and actively involved in shaping the school’s success.
Parents have regular contact and communication with their child’s teacher, ensuring a strong home-school connection and ongoing dialogue about their child’s progress. Additionally, we gather valuable insights through our termly stakeholder surveys. The feedback collected drives improvement and is shared through our “You Said, We Listened” updates, demonstrating how we have acted on their suggestions to make the school even better.
We warmly embrace parents’ involvement in a variety of school events, from whole-school celebrations to year-group-specific activities. These occasions provide opportunities for parents to engage with their child’s learning journey and contribute to our vibrant school community.
Our Mamoura Parents’ Association plays a pivotal role in helping to shape the direction of the school. This dedicated group of parents collaborates with school leadership to provide valuable insights and initiatives that enhance the educational experience for all.
We also value the hands-on support of parents who contribute directly to learning and development, such as assisting with reading programs and participating in student leadership groups. Their involvement not only enriches our school but also reinforces the importance of community in education.
Through these efforts, we ensure that parents and the community are integral partners in our mission to relentlessly pursue excellence.
At Mamoura British Academy, we understand that great teachers are at the heart of an exceptional school, and we are committed to cultivating a school culture that attracts, supports, and retains the very best educators.
We foster an environment where teachers feel valued and empowered by prioritizing their professional growth and well-being. Our Professional Development Cycle is carefully designed to ensure meaningful impact. Through a model that combines research-based workshops, collaborative team sessions, and opportunities for reflection, we provide teachers with structured yet flexible pathways to enhance their practice.
Collaboration and mentorship are also integral to our culture. Our MET Team—comprising our most experienced teachers—share expertise and provide guidance to newer staff members, fostering a supportive community where educators learn and grow together.
Well-being is always a priority for us, and we strive to create a positive work-life balance for our teachers. This includes thoughtful scheduling, equitable distribution of teaching commitments, and a focus on building a strong sense of community among staff.
We also celebrate and recognize the contributions of our teachers through regular appreciation initiatives, opportunities for leadership development, and a shared commitment to our core values.
As a Principal, my definition of success goes beyond academic achievement—it’s about creating an environment where every student is empowered to reach their full potential, both personally and academically. Success means fostering a community built on trust, respect, and kindness, where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to become lifelong learners and compassionate global citizens. It’s about building strong partnerships with staff, parents, and the wider community to ensure that each child’s journey is not only successful but also fulfilling and meaningful.
